چکیده

The HERA-B Outer Tracker consists of drift tubes folded from polycarbonate foil and is operated with Ar/CF4/CO2 as drift gas. The detector has to stand radiation levels which are similar to LHC conditions. The first prototypes exposed to radiation in HERA-B suffered severe radiation damage due to the development of self-sustaining currents (Malter effect). In a subsequent extended R&D program major changes to the original concept for the drift tubes (surface conductivity, drift gas, production materials) have been developed and validated for use in harsh radiation environments. In the test program various aging effects (such as Malter currents, gain loss due to anode aging and etching of the anode gold surface) were observed, and cures by tuning of operation parameters were developed. In this paper we describe the operation and performance of the HERA-B Outer Tracker, a 112 674 channel system of planar drift tube layers. The performance of the HERA-B Outer Tracker system fullfilled all requirements for stable and efficient operation in a hadronic environment, thus confirming the adequacy of the honeycomb drift tube technology and of the front-end readout system. Aging Studies of Drift Chambers of the HERA-B Outer Tracker Using CF4-based Gases

The intense radiation environment in the HERA-B experiment, being comparable to that of LHC experiments, requires that the detector be very resistant to high radiation loads. The Outer Tracker of HERA-B consists of drift tubes folded from polycarbonate foils (honeycomb) and is operated with a CF4-containing gas mixture. Aging tests made in HERA-B, under hadronic irradiation, using prototype dri...

First Studies on Software Alignment for the Hera-b Outer Tracker

A rst study of software alignment for the Outer Tracker with the standard HERA-B software environment has been performed, using fully simulated events with an average of ve superimposed interactions, and full pattern recognition. The method of hit selection and estimation of the visible shift are discussed in detail. The method was tested in scenarios with displacements of full layers and indiv...

A Study of Millepede Alignment Algorithm on Monte Carlo Model of Hera-b Outer Tracker

In this paper a method of internal alignment of HERA-B OTR PC chambers is discussed. The method is based on simultaneous ˇt of the track and alignment parameters using Millepede matrix reduction and singular value decomposition. Software which implements this idea has been developed, the method has been studied on Monte Carlo models with different levels of simulation. A method generalization f...
